Technology

How a Tube Furnace Works

Understanding the core operating principles helps you select the right configuration and get the most from your thermal process.

1

Sample Loading & Tube Sealing

The sample is placed inside the work tube (alumina, quartz, or MgO) and the tube is sealed at both ends with flanged end caps. Gas inlet and outlet fittings allow atmosphere control throughout the process.

2

Atmosphere Purging

Before heating begins, the tube is purged with the process gas (nitrogen, argon, hydrogen, or a custom mix) to displace residual oxygen and moisture. Vacuum-rated models can evacuate to 10⁻³ Pa before backfilling.

3

Programmed Heating Ramp

The PID controller executes the programmed temperature profile — up to 30 segments including ramps, soaks, and controlled cool-down steps. Heating elements (SiC, MoSi₂, or Kanthal) surround the tube uniformly.

4

Process Hold at Target Temperature

The furnace maintains the set temperature within ±1°C across the hot zone. Continuous gas flow maintains atmosphere purity. For rotary models, the tube rotates to ensure uniform sample exposure.

5

Controlled Cooling & Unloading

The furnace cools at the programmed rate under protective atmosphere. Fast-cooling models use forced gas quench to accelerate cool-down. Once at safe temperature, the tube is vented and the sample unloaded.

Why Brother Furnace

Built for Precision. Designed to Last.

Every tube furnace we manufacture is engineered from the ground up for thermal accuracy, atmosphere integrity, and long-term reliability in demanding laboratory and production environments.

01

±1°C Temperature Uniformity

Precision-wound heating elements and optimised insulation geometry deliver ±1°C uniformity across the hot zone — verified by thermocouple survey at factory acceptance testing.

02

Sealed Atmosphere Integrity

Stainless steel flanged end caps with O-ring seals maintain gas-tight integrity down to 10⁻³ Pa. KF vacuum fittings and leak-tested welds are standard on all sealed-tube models.

03

Intelligent PID Control

Programmable 30-segment PID controller with over-temperature protection, RS485 communication, and PC software for profile editing, real-time monitoring and data export.

04

In-House Manufacturing

Furnace chambers, heating elements, insulation assemblies and control panels are all manufactured in our own facilities — full quality control from raw material to final test.

05

Factory Acceptance Testing

Every furnace undergoes full FAT before shipment: temperature uniformity survey, atmosphere leak test, controller function check and witnessed thermal cycle. FAT report included.

06

Lifetime Technical Support

Spare parts, replacement tubes, heating elements, and process troubleshooting are available for the full operating life of your furnace. Critical issues receive a 24-hour response.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the most common questions our customers ask before selecting and ordering a vacuum sintering furnace.

What tube material should I choose — alumina, quartz, or MgO?

Quartz (fused silica) is suitable for processes up to 1200°C and is the most economical option — ideal for general annealing and atmosphere work. Alumina (Al₂O₃, 99.7%) is recommended for temperatures up to 1700°C and is chemically inert to most process gases. MgO tubes are used for reactive or corrosive atmospheres above 1600°C. For hydrogen atmospheres above 800°C, alumina is strongly preferred over quartz. Contact our team with your process temperature and gas composition for a specific recommendation.

Can I run hydrogen (H₂) in a Brother Furnace tube furnace?

Yes. Our sealed-tube models are designed for hydrogen and hydrogen/nitrogen mixed atmospheres (forming gas). The furnace is supplied with stainless steel flanged end caps, KF vacuum fittings, and a gas flow control system. For H₂ operation, we strongly recommend our gas safety package, which includes a hydrogen leak detector, automatic gas shutoff valve, and exhaust gas burn-off port. All hydrogen-compatible models are clearly identified in our product documentation.

What is the difference between a single-zone and multi-zone tube furnace?

A single-zone furnace has one heating element winding and one PID controller, maintaining a uniform temperature across the entire hot zone — ideal for most sintering, annealing, and CVD processes. A multi-zone furnace has 2, 3, or 5 independently controlled heating zones along the tube length, each with its own thermocouple and PID controller. This enables deliberate temperature gradients along the tube — required for zone-refining, crystal growth, and diffusion studies where different sections of the sample must be held at different temperatures simultaneously.

How long does delivery take and what is the warranty?

Standard tube furnace models have a production lead time of 15–25 working days from order confirmation. Custom configurations may require 30–45 working days. We ship worldwide by sea, air freight, or express courier depending on urgency and destination. The standard warranty is 12 months from commissioning or 18 months from shipment date, whichever comes first, covering manufacturing defects in the furnace body, heating elements, and control system. Consumable items (work tubes, O-ring seals, thermocouple sheaths) are excluded.

Can the furnace be connected to a PC for data logging?

Yes. All Brother Furnace tube furnaces include RS485 serial communication as standard, with USB adaptor included. Free PC software allows real-time temperature monitoring, profile programming from a PC interface, and data export to CSV for analysis. Optional Ethernet and Wi-Fi modules are available for network-connected laboratory environments. The controller also stores up to 30 programmable temperature profiles in internal memory for standalone operation.

What power supply voltage options are available?

Standard voltage options are 220V/50Hz (single phase), 380V/50Hz (three phase), 415V/50Hz, and 480V/60Hz. Please specify your local supply voltage when placing your order. All furnaces are supplied with a voltage label and wiring diagram. For countries with non-standard voltages, an external transformer can be supplied as an option. Power consumption ranges from approximately 1.5 kW (small laboratory models) to 12 kW (large 1700°C models with 120 mm tube diameter).
